Whenever someone mentions that they have an old Barbour jacket, the chances are high that they have a Bedale.
The one I have photographed came from one of the local charity shops complete with hood & pile lining. To find ‘3 piece’ Barbour in a charity shop is madness, but to find one in this condition is completely unheard of.
The Bedale was created in 1980 by Dame Margaret Barbour for equestrian use originally. The shorter length and pop fastening side vents made the jacket perfect for horse riding. Inside the jacket, the famous Dress Gordon tartan was used 3/4 of the way down and then a nylon liner finished it off for water protection.
Bedales used to have 4 front pockets, but over time the two chest pockets were replaced for the standard moleskin hand warmers. Two bellow pockets and the large brown corduroy collar finish off the jacket beautifully.
Forever being made, you can pick up one from the Barbour online store or from my friends over at Outdoor and Country here.
I’d love to add a Bedale to my arsenal of Barbours, but the sleeves are usually shorter than other jackets of my size so it has pretty been difficult to pin one down and keep. This one now lives in Denmark.
hi do you have any information about the Barbour Kelsall jacket? i picked one up for $170AUD for the missus but i cant find sizing info or a write up on the barbour website…

I’m not too savvy with the women’s side, I’m afraid I don’t know much about that jacket.

Hello, Quick novice question – I saw a barbour bedale that has a blank barbour black label (Barbour 3 royal appointment black label) without the model or ‘bedale’ written between gold lines, it’s just blank/ black. Is this normal for the main black barbour label? The white label was there with only size (c40/ 102cm), ‘name’ space and material info (cotton etc), no model number e.g. A100. I know its a bedale because it has button vents/ flaps at the back and the old classic green and white with gold pin stripe tartan.
To add further mystery, it also has a liner with blank barbour black 3 royal appointment label, does have white label with model number: ‘A297 Lining’, but only gives Sizing c40/102cm and name space. It doesn’t mention acrylic or warm piling like other liner examples.
There is no bar-coding of either of the white tags either, if that means its older perhaps?
Here was the photo:

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey!! That would be a licensed Barbour jacket made in New Zealand. They’re still Barbour jackets but not as desirable!

Thanks for the quick reply! So is it the blank black Barbour label in the jacket that gives it away as being from New Zealand?

It says on the label!

Hello, quick question! What model number is the hood, is it also an A100 or is it an A128?
